What fees should I actually expect to pay?

Trading commissions

Many brokers now offer commission-free stock and ETF trading. However, options trading, mutual funds, and bonds may still carry per-trade charges. Some brokers charge for currency conversions or account transfers.

Management and account fees

If you use a financial advisor or robo-advisor, expect an annual percentage fee (often 0.5% to 1% of assets). Some brokers charge monthly or annual account maintenance fees, especially for lower balances. Always ask whether minimums exist.

Hidden costs

Broker spreads (the gap between buy and sell prices) are built into quotes but not shown as a "fee." Mutual funds charge expense ratios. International trades may include conversion fees. Review your statements to spot unexpected charges before investing significantly.
